1. Do you consider that occupations need to be added to or removed from the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)?

Added to MLTSSL

What occupations should be added to the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)?

Please also include occupations that you propose should be moved from the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) to the MLTSSL.

599612 Insurance Loss Adjuster

Please outline the evidence or data that would support these occupations being added to the MLTSSL.

Due to the increase in severe weather related events and the growth of the population the need for insurance loss adjusters is increasing. There are not enough skilled and qualified loss adjusters currently in Australia to meet demand during catastrophe response. In order to meet public and government demands for timely response to claims particularly during large events the numbers of insurance adjusters need to be boosted and people with skills that can be used to train next generations are essential. From knowing nothing to being competent in larger losses takes a minimum of 5 to 10 years, it is not possible to gain the technical knowledge in a short period of time, after an event has occurred and there are currently no reserve staff to call on. It has been often the case that experienced retired adjusters are dragged back to work in an attempt to fill the gaps. A strategy needs to be in place to boost numbers quickly during events and to promote continual growth in insurance loss adjuster numbers in line with population growth that cannot be achieved by organic means (waiting for claims staff to be promoted to the ranks)

This is particularly important during major event responses where there simply are not enough up and coming loss adjusters to swell the ranks enough to maintain expectations of the government and public of a swift response. I have been a loss adjuster for the past 15 years and simply would not have coped with volumes generated without the assistance of overseas adjusters. We would still be processing claims from Cyclone Yasi and the QLD Floods from 2011 now without this assistance and most of us would have been mentally injured at work by stress and work loads. Many still suffered from stress related injuries even though adjusters were brought from outside Australia.
