1. Do you consider that occupations need to be added to or removed from the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)?

Added to MLTSSL

What occupations should be added to the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)?

Please also include occupations that you propose should be moved from the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) to the MLTSSL.

211499 Visual Arts and Crafts Professionals nec
212314 Film and Video Editor

Please outline the evidence or data that would support these occupations being added to the MLTSSL.

This essay will discuss why removing film and video editors from the STSOL will be a terrible decision from the Department of Jobs and Small Business.

Hollywood studios received $140 million to choose Australia as a film location. In recent years, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has taken on the film industry as a special project. She stated in May 2018: “We have a highly skilled workforce that can compete with the best in the world, but in order for us to remain competitive, we needed this additional incentive, and I’m delighted that this will mean more jobs”.

The Queensland screen industry is heavily dependent on offshore productions. If they cannot attract professional video editors and visual artists, how are they going to compete with Hollywood? This will not only affect Queensland but New South Wales as well.

The acclaimed director of Alien, Ridley Scott, spoke about the value in Australia as a filming destination, the quality and variety of our locations, but more importantly the highly qualified and talented workforce, the embrace of innovative technology, and a stable economy.

Australian filmmakers have been pleading with the Government to step up funding and protection for local production. Veteran producer Nick Murray expressed caution and stated that making changes without considering home-grown productions could hurt the fragile industry. Removing all the media positions from the STSOL is like feeding a patient who just survived a heart stroke with a Grand Big Mac.

In conclusion, visual artists, video editors and people in the media industry bring innovation and deliver jobs to this country.
